Momisms and their response
I already know how to spell "enough"
My son will say "you should, you always tell us that is enough"
I don't wear your clothes, but I wash them anyway
My daughter will say "that is like so dumb, you know you can't stand the smell of dirty clothes, but these are clean, why should I put them up"
I have told you 4 times to brush your teeth.
My son will say "nuh uh, it has only been three times"
How many times do I have to pick up a pony tail/scrunchie?
My daughter will say "Just leave them there, I know where they are."

You know the look...
If you are the mother of a teenage daughter (maybe even a teenage son) you will know the look I am talking about.
Picked up some shorts and tank tops yesterday for my daughter. The shorts passed, the tanks did not - and I thought they were cute.
She did not. And I got the look.
The look that means I am stupid, have no clue what life is about, why do I even think she would even wear them to sleep in those much less wear them in public.

There is something wrong with me.
Or that is what people are telling me via my mailbox about once a week.
For the past month I have been receiving letters from "study groups" inviting me to participate in trial studies on the one of the following:
depression (yes, I have my moments, but I am not consumed)
Foot Fungus (I don't even know why I am on this one)
Stress (ya think?)
hair loss (not a problem - my hair is in the midst of being "wild")
I'll close for now, I think I am feeling sickly.

Cell phone observations.
For a person who went YEARS without a cell phone, how has it become such an important accessory? When did that happen? (in case you didn't figure it out, I am talking about me)
I "officially" joned the cell phone world in August. I am still keeping it simple, no camera, downloaded ringtones, internet, etc. Yet.
Why bother to program numbers in the phone, that I have memorized?
Why do I need games on my phone? When will I stop accidently hitting the button that redials the last number called?
Wallpaper - geesh I have a hard enough time choosing for my computer.

Children of Divorce
I know it is little consolation to those of you who do not have children, who have gone through a divorce, and someone will say "Well, at least you don't have children involved in the whole mess."
Amen to that.
Children of divorce..
1. Are more world wise (this can be good or bad depending on what and how they are taught)
2. They are more resilient
3. They are more independent
4. They are more practical-most kids I know who have divorced parents are very practical compared to their counterparts.
5. They appreciate the small things in life
6. They are feisty
Children of divorce
1. Miss the other parent
2. Remember the arguments
3. Call the other parent 20 times on a weekend when it's their weekend with the other
4. Have a hard time scheduling "stuff" - you think it is hard to fit in their schedule with one parent's household...imagine working around two households.
5. Somewhere in the back of their minds they are still wishing mom and dad will get back together.
Children of divorce hurt no matter how old they are. It will do us all well to remember that.

Organization....Part 3?
Yesterday was my first Saturday "off" in several weeks. I had lofty plans... I had no plans. Just to stay home and work toward my goal in getting my act together and getting things and me more organized.
In this massive cleaning of closets, drawers, shelves, boxes, I know I have enough material for several blogs...so I will have fun with it.
Keep in mind that basically our house is clean - like everyone else- we just have "stuff", excuse me, Junk. Normally I give everything a years rotation, if it is not worn, used, read, picked up in 1 year - it is history.
A few observations.....
4 closets were cleaned out, now I don't eat Doritos in my closet, much less eat them in my shoe box, so why were there Doritos in my shoe box? Just wondering.
My daughter is in 8th grade - so, including Kindergarten and preschool she has had 11 years worth of school supplies. My son is in 2nd. You see where I am going with this? I found a pair of scissors for every year of their school careers. I found 14 pairs of scissors. I am pretty sure Fiskars needs to send me a thank you note for keeping their doors open. Where did I find the scissors? Well, glad you asked, because my friends I am here to tell you. Shoebox, underwear drawer, sock drawer, inside the Monopoly game, under the TV, Inside a pillowcase, medicine chest, make up box, I could keep going. And you know what? Usually no one can find scissors when we need them.
Everyone needs a pair of tweezers, chap stick, glue stick, pack of gum, a tootsie roll and a quarter in their underwear drawer.
My daughter does not match up socks....she like doesn't have any "pairs", she just mixes and goes.
Hot Wheel cars belong in my jewelry box (such as it is)
I am the only mom in the history of the world, that makes her kids clean up on Saturdays. I ruined their lives. Oh, Darn.

In search of a pair of earrings we found...
A coworker wanted to borrow a pair of earrings for her daughter. These earrings my daughter wore in the beauty pageant...
Instead of the earrings....we found..
2 Pairs of scissors
35 tampons
9 Ink pens
5 Sharpies
A necklace
Cd case that has been missing for a while
Empty candy bar wrapper
Deodorant top
3 pairs of nail clippers (they disappear at once and are found at once)
The long piece of paper from a Fruit Roll Up
Candy Cane
2 dried roses
No earrings
I give up.

Today I don't like being single.....
Okay, I know I bounce back and forth on this view, but hey I guess we're all entitled.
I have talked to two single friends today, and they are feeling the same way. Overwhelmed, tired, and lonely.
I know Spring is supposed to be the season of new life and rebirth - but it is hard for some people. It is wedding season...need I say more. Everything seems to be couple oriented - again I think it goes back to being wedding season.
I went to lunch today - and normally I don't have this problem..but today I did and I eat there all the time....."Just one? Are you waiting for someone?" "Um...no, just me...." "Well, okay, we have a little table over here. " I will forgive her this time, I could have given birth to her. But next time, it's on.
Guy at post office, "Mam, you need to have your husband look at your front tire, it is a little low, and if you can't do it, the gas station is still open." (we still have a full service station). I just said thank you. For those of you who want to know I can check air and add air as needed, change light fuses, minor stuff. Hmmph.
But today I don't like being single, because I am lonely.
I am sure tomorrow I will go back to my normal self...hope so, because I don't like this pain.

You are acting like...such a girl.
I am enjoying my second manicure.
The other day when cleaning, I really messed up a nail, it was tore off, my finger is bruised. (everyone say awwwwwwww) I did the whole pain dance, you know where you kind of hop up and down, blow on the injured finger, run to the sink for cold water...like any of it helps.
I showed my nails to a friend, and I was told.. "You are acting like such a girl, when did that happen?"
Trying to decide if I should be insulted.
By the way, just so you can sleep tonight, I had my nail repaired today. My finger is still bruised and it still hurts, but I have nails, darn it. I am hoping one day to have a pedicure. Wow.

Organization Part 2
Okay folks I did a couple of things toward my quest of returning to the "Organized" part of my personality. (I tell you this, thinking you care, but also to hold myself accountable)
I cleaned out my portfolio and day-timer. I also cleaned out make-up boxes (the strangest things end up in my make-up box -but I have talked about that before), the baskets on my dresser, (they are catch all - I just drop stuff in them), put up a stack of books, cleaned out a nightstand. It felt good. I accomplished something.

Flag Football and Soccer
My son's first practice was today. I was the only mom there. The other boys had their dads.
I stood a healthy distance away, as not to embarrass him. He did wave to me once.
This is one of those times it hurts being a single parent.
While he was practicing my daughter was at the soccer fields practicing, I am going to have to figure out a way to balance their games. I am thinking on calling on some of my friends. I am at one game with one child, etc. That is the best thing I can think of.
This is one example of how hard is not to be part of a two parent household - with two parents, each can be at a different game -you just swap out. The kids need to look up and see that someone is there for them, cheering them on.

MONDAY
Monday is a hard day for me, I am always so tired, and it is hard to get up. I think they should really tell the local radio dj's to say this every Monday at 5:00 a.m. (My alarm is set for 5:00 - buy my eyelids don't wake up until 5:30) Okay, back to the dj's. Starting at 5:00 = they should say....every 9 minutes in a deep whisper type voice...
"Becky...time to get up..it will be a good day."
If they do this, surely two things will happen.
I will actually get up without hitting the snooze button several times.
And the subliminal communication of it being a good day will come to life.

Ministry..
Just a few posts ago I wrote on ministry. I had to be talking to myself.
Tonight in kid's choir was a rough one, more kids than usual, and we had fewer workers.
It is hard not to be discouraged at times. But I know I have to take this night and learn from it. Some kids were so sleepy, some so ill, two missing mom, etc, etc.
I have a passion and a drive for this ministry. It comes from someone far bigger and greater than I. And why God chose me, sometimes I don't understand, but I know I am here for a reason.
So I will learn from tonight, handle things differently and move on.
If you are one of my parents or workers. Know that I love you and I love your kids...and as we say in Church...
God is good..
All the time!
Love,
Ms. Becky!

Organization
I consider myself or used to consider myself organized.
Well, that has flown out the window. Geesh.
It is my goal in the upcoming two weeks to get it together here at home,my closet, in my car, my purse, the office and at church.
I have stuff everywhere - it is not sloppy - it is in stacks, but the stacks are driving me nuts.
This is not like me. I am a use it or get rid of it type gal.
I am a list maker - but I've been losing my lists.
Not like me at all. I will get better. Or I will go nuts.

In light of the below post and a few conversations with friends..
Any teenager or child reading this...
Your parents care...
When they check your emails and Internet usage.
When they monitor phone calls.
When they check school folders and back packs.
When they may read your journal.
When you have a curfew.
When they insist on knowing who you are hanging out with.
When they tell you no.
When you are not allowed to date at 14.
When they hold you accountable.
When they ground you.
When they check to make sure you are where you are supposed to be.
When they show up early to make sure you are where you are supposed to be.
When they discourage a friendship with someone who makes questionable choices.
When they make sure your clothes are appropriate.
Whey they pray for you.
When they pray over you.

"Mom, I have something to tell you, and you can't tell anyone...."
Well, that statement will bless a mother.
I am glad that my daughter feels comfortable coming to me (Even though we have our moments where we don't like each other.)
This is what she told me...
One of her best friends admitted to having sex.
She is 14.
I am sick, sick, sick....
My daughter is upset....
Just a few years ago - this friend of hers..was waiting on Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.
I know this friend, I have taken her shopping, she has spent the night here. Her home life has not been that great.
I am sick, but not surprised.

My week...
It has not been a good week. I am exhausted. Drained mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Work has been hard - harder than it has been in a long time and I feel like I didn't do a good job on the simplest of tasks. I put off filing and I never do that. I let myself become overwhelmed and distracted-and usually I am pretty organized and with it in my little office. I consider my office the one place where I have some semblance of control and have a sense of accomplishment when I leave each day.
My mother went to the doctor on Tuesday. I took her. We were there for a long time. We arrived at 2:30 - left at 5:30 - didn't get home to after 7:30. We are waiting for test results.
The kids great grandmother called Thursday - she was in pain - crying. So I took her to the doctor- wasn't a long wait - she is okay. She is a very feisty 93-year old.
These two dr visits were two of three that I made in a 7-day span. Both kids went last Thursday - strep throat. Whoo hoo.
No child support yet. I need desperately - because the kids dr visits with dr and medicine cost me a lot - whew (we are in insurance limbo right now)
I think the time change has something to do with my mood and sleep pattern. Is anyone else feeling weird?
I long for one night when I can come home and sit for 5 minutes without someone wanting me to do something. It will never happen.
I think I did some sleep-walking last night. Can't confirm it - but there were dishes in my room this morning...weird (that's Twilight Zone music you are hearing in my head)
I am still struggling with loneliness.
I ache for one of my best friends - I would do anything to take the pain away.
I am not sleeping. I will crash and sleep for hours eventually. I think I am pretty close.

Just one time...
Just one time could a man flirt with me who is not old enough to be my father, not married, and can speak English?
Today at lunch - my 40ish something waiter -could not speak English clearly - however, he flirted and flirted.
Now don't get me wrong, I am flattered - but heck fire - I want to know what he was saying!
I understood, pretty eyes and come back.
I will say it again....Just one time could a man flirt with me not be old enough to be my father or grandfather (I blame Viagra for this), not married (don't even get me started - I end up lecturing them), and can speak English?
Or maybe I should learn a 2nd even 3rd language...think of the possibilities.

New use for old phone books (or even new phone books)
With my job, we are two offices ( two publications) in one building. Between the two offices, we have several phone and fax lines. And the phone company, (and I kid you not) gives us on the average of 3 phone books (yellow and white pages) per line - on my side there are 9 - so you do the math.
These phone books pile up - we feel guilty if we chunk them, so we stack them up.
Well, my son's teacher sent a note home, needing old phone books. I was so excited - and my fellow office manager was too! They are in my back seat - ready for delivery. Finally they are out of the office.
They will use them to learn how to look things up. Good thing. Because my daughter couldn't find her own name in the phone book.
Don't know why I thought this was interesting - just seemed kind of cool to finally get them out of my office.

Ministry
I had the pleasure of sitting down with someone the other day who was sweet enough to prepare a light meal for me and my children before Kid's choir the other night. She wanted to find out about Kid's Choir and what I see happening with it. And how our ministry has stayed strong.
First of all, by no means am I an expert. I just love what I do. I love Jesus and I love kids. It's not about me, it's about God.
That is the first rule to any ministry. It's about God. Keep the focus on Him.
Understand you will have off nights/days. Be flexible. Don't let the frustration block your service.
Recruit an AWESOME team. And I have one.
For the ministry leader. Never ask of your team something you would not do yourself. Whether it is working, painting, bagging garbage, cooking, gluing leaves to headbands or giving. If you don't do it, then don't ask your team to do it.
If you want your team to be there at 5:45 -then you should be be there at 5:20 to set up for them. You could not do what you do without them.
If you are working with kids - again-flexibility is key. But a schedule is important.
Plan
Pray
Remember the first rule...It's all about God.
Laundry....
Okay Missouri Becky....
Explain to me how laundry that the youngest female member was supposed to fold and put away ended up wrapped in a quilt, stuffed under the bed behind a box of movies? Didn't that take more work than the "fold and put away part?"
And most of it was mine!
I give up, I really do.

AARP and Walmart
My sister called me with the funniest story.
(to set the stage...she is 13 years older than me)
She was in Walmart the other day - an employee started talking - how Senior Citizens receive discounts, etc on certain items or days (I don't know details on the when and what of the discounts-no emails please). And then she looked my sister and said, and today those 60 and over will receive a free donut.
My sister is not 60. (thank goodness that would be put me at 47) My sister looked at the lady and said "I don't eat donuts." She was so mad - and wondered "Why did that woman feel the need to tell me about the donut?"
And she has learned she qualifies for AARP benefits - she is chaning over some life insurance-because of the price difference.
She said the was going to need strong therapy after filling out all the paperwork.
She has been in denial about her age for so long...she was starting to believe it.
I told her to get a donut and fill out the papers.

Freezing.
There's that word again, I was told yesterday I am the master of freezing men out.
Let me take my bow now.
I don't like to consider it freezing men out, I like to think of it as, not being interested. Being choosy.
I don't need a man. I am waiting for the right one, at the right time, God's time.
(and yes I know I still struggle with loneliness and the stress of single parenting - but I know it is all in God's timing)
With all the above said, I wish I understood everything.

"Am I the worst player on the team?"
This is what my daughter asked me today after soccer practice. She has only played once before - and that was with church this past fall. She is not that experienced.
She is worried. She was not as aggressive today as she was on the church team.
This is a co-ed team. Church team was all girls.
No, she wasn't the worst player- none were bad-I am proud of her for trying - she has more gutso and courage than I did at that age.
This is a co-ed team - she is shaving her legs as I type.

I love my friends...and this is one of the many reasons:
I received this from my friend A.B. - thanks girl!
just read your last few blogs - I am writing to let you know that IT WILL BE OK - because, once I find a man S.H. and I find worthy of you and he passes a background check, in depth physical, psych consult and friend questioning approved by the FBI and CIA we will plan all the necessary showers and parties to welcome him into our little crew. In the meantime, I am checking out all eligible looking guys !!!!
Have a good day cause we got your back girl :)

The Loneliness is Back.
The loneliness is back, I have no idea why, but it is. And I have been swamped this weekend-so it is not stemmed from boredom.
Loneliness it is hard. I was in Wal-mart today and saw a man check out with about 5 microwave dinners, one of those half-loaves of bread, and three apples. Somehow that hurt my heart.
I just wish, no long for someone to care about my day, to hold me for just a few minutes at least. To hear that it will be okay.

How do you explain?
How do you explain to your friends who do not have children, the obligations of soccer, flag football, student choir, science projects and Augmentin? And when you do try - how do you keep from upsetting them?
How do you explain to one of your best friends, that it is time to let go - and you encourage to do so - because you care?
How do you explain to the folks you live with, to turn the heat down, if you are cold, put on a sweater and short sleeves when it is hot? And when they don't do this you have $333 electric bill?
How do you explain timing to your heart?
How do you explain your paycheck cycle and lack of child support to the electric company?
How do you explain to the pharmacy, they really need to hurry because your son's asthma has surfaced in a big way? And to the guy behind you, that though in some small way you are flattered, you are not interested without being rude?
How do you explain some friendships you don't even understand?
How do you explain the American Idol results?(for the record I am finished with this show)
How do you explain how the City of Memphis will spend money on stadiums, pandas, music festivals, but not on their schools? Furthermore how can I get on the VIP list? (for those not from Elvisville - research MLGW, Memphis, Willie Herrington, The Ford Family, The Tennessee Waltz, etc, etc, etc,)
How do you explain how we as Christians don't make our voices louder?
How do you explain how I slept with a Hot Wheel car and helicopter last night, and didn't know it? (They were in between the sheet and quilt)
I could keep going........

Cat A, DNA, Time Change, Strep Throat, and Zoloft.
Yeah, buddy bet that title caught your eye.
Here we go...Cat A - English/Reading project for my son - involving a book by Dr. Seuss. Due on the 16th- but thankfully it is finished. It was instructed to be a "family project." We made Cat A from a paper plate, red and white construction paper, wiggle eyes, pipe cleaner, a ton of glue and tape, and of course crayons.
DNA - my daughter is doing a report on DNA for science. Has she worked on it, no, of course not. And it is my fault.
Strep Throat. Both of my kids had it. For my son, you add double ear infection. And the doctors want me to schedule appointments to see about having his tonsils removed.
Zoloft. My mother ran out. Can't let that happen.
I'm telling you, this Becky needs a vacation in a big way.

Boxing up memories
I know two people right now who are boxing up memories.
Boxing up for different reasons, but it is still painful for them. One wants to forget and the other feels guilty for moving on.
I don't like looking back. No, let me rephrase that, I hate looking back, I don't even like looking at photo albums, yearbooks, old home movies, etc.
However, if I could somehow go back....
This is what I would the tell the girl that used to be me:
1) Try more things - don't give up so easily.
2) Finish college - finish college - finish college - don't give up.
3) Don't get married at 19 - if you don't you will accomplish #2
4) Date more - don't marry the only guy you ever dated. (See #2 & #3)
5) You always wanted to learn how to play the Banjo and Guitar - do it! (must have been all those Saturday nights watching Hee-Haw - I still love country music)
6) You should move out on your own before marrying. (See #2, #3 & #4)
7) You should pay attention to Friday night conversations (See #2, #3, #4 & #6)
I am sure there are more things I could tell her, but these are the more important ones.

Two remarkable women....
In the past two days, I have met two remarkable women.
The first lost her husband about a year and a half ago - and she misses him deeply. However, she is staying busy, doing new things, and gaining a new perspective on life. She is funny, smart, open and friendly. Stronger than she gives herself credit for, but I have a feeling she will find out what she is made of a little each day, especially now as she sorts through memories.
The second I met today while at lunch, we were both ordering the chicken salad at Lenny's. She has been married to her husband for 54 years, loves him so much. He is a retired minister, and just had surgery. She was a school teacher. They were sweet to watch as she helped him be seated. She is of the old school southern grace, the accent soft as she talks. We were strangers - but started talking, she teared up when she started talking about her husband. He waved to her from the table. When she went back to their seats, he tried to stand up, but she gently told him to sit. Again, I will say it, it was really sweet to watch.
I have been trying to figure out why these ladies made such an impact on me, and have yet to decide. Is it their strength? Grace? Dignity? Humor? The loved they shared/share with their husband? I am sure it is a combination of all the above.

Dear U.S. Army,
My son is 8 years old. If I were to guess, I would say he wants to join your ranks as soon as he is old enough. I also know given the right training, he will work his way up through the ranks.
He loves everything Army. He dreams of serving just like those who have before him.
I am his mother, I don't know if I should encourage this dream. No, let me rephrase that - I don't want to, but I see him so clearly serving. Always have. So encourage I will.
So, I am thinking if you want to go ahead and come over every night and breathe down his neck to get his homework done, please do so. He needs tons of dental work-feel free to take care of that - then you can use his photo and smile on recruiting posters. He is not a master swimmer - we need help on that - his mother does not swim.
Dear U.S. Army, take care of our soldiers, present, past and future. Dear soldiers, thank you for your service and for being role models for my son.

Walgreens
I know I have written about Walgreens before. But I have to tell you - I love this store.
Smaller than Walmart, you don't have to wait in terribly long lines. And you can buy some really cool stuff in there.
Last night I was in one with a friend - and made the following observations:
Walgreens still has the "as seen on TV aisle. I picture dads who really don't know their daughter, going in and buying the Be-dazzler. Grandsons buying "The clapper" for their grandmother. And so, so on. (and don't forget the Chia Pet)
You walk in the door you can turn two ways - toward the Photo lab ( and I think their people are the best at this!), or toward the make-up and perfume. And I've yet to meet a lady in the cosmetics I didn't like. Somehow she understands why you need Almay foundation, Maybelline eye shadow, and Dove Deodorant - it makes sense to her.
You can buy Ben & Jerry's at most locations. (Thank goodness)
The local newspaper is at the front.
They always have a "season" aisle. Right now it is Easter, but every holiday or season, it is fun to walk down. I always find stuff you can't find in other stores.
I like the pharmacy.
They have Hallmark cards.
They have school supplies and magnet mirrors for lockers. (why I noticed this, I don't know)
At the cash register, you will find and probably buy one of the following: lip gloss, Kleenex, glue, fudge, pens, gum, aspirin, a universal remote, a flashlight, a lighter, pregnancy test (see next item), condoms (see prior item), gift cards to restaurants, phone cards, stamps, People magazine, an electronic dancing bird, bottled water, a map and it just keeps going.
You can get most of your shopping done without ever stepping away from the cash register. Too cool!

Dear Hollywood...
I really don't watch your movies for your views on politics, religion, global warming, the world turning in the right direction, and your relationships.
I watch movies to escape..to have a couple of hours of pleasure. To pretend.
Please stop talking.
The Oscars, the Al Gore love fest, and all the coverage afterwards made me physically ill. Now I have more people I will not watch at the movies. Thanks a lot.

A quote from Robin Williams...
Last night I was watching an interview with Robin Williams...his grandmother was from Memphis.
He had this to say about Southern Women.
When a southern woman says "Bless your heart" she is actually saying "Back off B****"
I say this all the time, and a lot of the time you are genuinely sincere, and you wish everything nice on the person you are talking too.
However (don't you love that word?)
He has a point. (A southern woman can chew you out and it still sound good to a man's ears...it's all in the delivery and style. Also a southern woman can make a criticizing remark sound like a backdoor compliment-trust me...it's a gift)
(I am going to work on not saying it-no, I am going to work on my overall attitude) But still it is funny to think about.

Flag Football and Soccer..
It has begun. My daughter will be playing spring soccer and my son flag football. So my Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays are now booked until June. Wednesdays and Sundays - church and other activities.
My son actually does better in school when he is involved in a sport.

The age old question...
Where do socks go after they are placed in the dryer?
You hold onto one from a pair waiting desperately for its mate to show up - you give up - throw it away, turn into a dust cloth ( good for ceiling fans by the way) and boom it shows up out of no where. How? Why? Is it just my house?
