You're not selfish to want a clean, hospitable home. That is a gift you have! We switched to laminate a few years back because of our pets. It has its problems, but it is easy to clean. We had to do it over time--we couldn't do it all at once. Hardwood is much nicer and not that much more expensive. Maybe you can do a room at a time.
